Tales from the Black Forest

Tales from the Black Forest is a German folktale book that represents my love of storytelling and pride in my heritage. The book contains twelve prints and stories derived from little-known German folktales. In order to dig deeper into the uncharted parts of my German heritage I found twelve little-known folktales which then had to be translated from old English. Once the stories were edited and condensed a specific moment within the folktales was chosen to be illustrated. Then from that illustration I transferred the image onto a linoleum block to be carved out. The illustrations are relief prints carved from linoleum blocks in the style of German woodcuts. This is done by carving into the surface of the block and then printing what remains. The color scheme of black and yellow was chosen to invoke medieval illuminated manuscripts. With this book I have added a contemporary chapter to my family tree that represents my personal contribution to the family as an artist, while exploring a part of my own heritage that pre-dates the family records.
